Grants
The Alberta Paraplegic Foundation is dedicated to funding research, rehabilitation, and community programs that improve the lives of individuals with spinal cord injuries.
Scientific and Community Development Grants
The APF provides funding under two categories: Scientific Grants and Community Development Grants.
As a provincial foundation, all Scientific and Community Development Grant requests are expected to demonstrate the benefit and support for Albertans living with spinal cord injury and should show connection to priorities identified in The Spinal Cord Injury Strategy for Alberta,

Scientific Grants
Scientific Grants will develop, contribute and further research or medical advances specific to spinal cord injury or disease resulting in spinal cord injury. This may include supporting scientific scholarships or other sponsorships.
Community Development Grants
Community Development Grants will focus on outcomes that result in rehabilitation, community support, assistance, inclusion, recreation, or other benefits for persons who are disabled or otherwise physically challenged, principally from spinal cord injury or disease.
Accessibility Funding
Accessibility Funding is an open application focused on supporting persons with a spinal cord injury anywhere in Alberta who are experiencing financial hardship, and who have a significant need for support to adapt and adjust in their community. This fund was established in 2024 through the R. Vance Milligan Memorial Fund and is administered by The Alberta Paraplegic Foundation (APF) in partnership with SCI-AB.
Applications are closed and will reopen in August 2025.

Currently Funded Grants
Project: Peer Program
- Type of Grant: Community Development
- Organization: Spinal Cord Injury Association Alberta
Funding provided by The APF will be used by SCI-AB for ongoing support of the peer program that is established in urban areas, and to modernize the peer structure to promote expansion of peer services into rural Alberta.
SCI-AB has two part-time Peer Coordinators (PCs) who provide valuable connections between newly injured individuals and those with lived experience in Calgary and Edmonton, but geographical and logistical challenges hinder outreach efforts to rural communities. Limited access to peer mentorship in these areas reduces opportunities for meaningful connection, support, and independence.
To expand peer services, SCI-AB will modify the staffing structure as well as the approach to peer services across the province. The initial goal will be to establish a strong presence of a paid PC in each of Alberta’s Zones (North, Central, South). One PC will be designated as Team Lead to provide leadership, guidance, direction and strategic implementation of the modernized approach to peer services.
Together, the PCs will create focused opportunities for persons with a spinal cord injury to connect through one-on-one interactions, small group meetings, and community events.
This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for PwSCI by enhancing peer support accessibility, smoothing the transition from hospital to community, and fostering inclusion and access to resources. In 2024, peer services offered in Calgary and Edmonton supported 1,254 individuals through 111 different events. With an estimated outreach potential of 125 individuals living outside major metropolitan centres, the program will extend mentorship and practical guidance to support PwSCI to achieve independence and community integration goals. The lived experiences of PCs, Mentors, and Ambassadors will reliably guide program improvements for meaningful and relevant support.
